A Slam-dunk for the First-Ever NBA Webcast

Toronto -- April 16, 2001
The first-ever live webcast of a full National Basketball Association game also marks the first time streaming media providers and viewers experienced a distinct quality improvement in the delivery of a big event webcast. Metrics from streaming media monitoring company Streamcheck show conclusively that Friday night's NBA game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Sacramento Kings reached its audience cleanly and consistently.

"The connection success rates we saw for the NBA game were the best we've seen for a webcast of this size," says Shai Berger, President, Streamcheck. "We've been monitoring live events over the course of the last 6 months and have noticed steady improvements."

According to Streamcheck's quality measurement metrics, Friday night's NBA game had a connection success rate of an astonishing 97.2 percent across the ten cities that were involved. The StreamQ™ rating was B+. (StreamQ™ - Streamcheck's proprietary metric, grades the level of user frustration associated with viewing a stream.)

"Until now, we would see 10 to 20 percent of connection attempts fail during a large event. We're definitely getting closer to making live webcasts ready for mass-market audiences." says Berger.

Ironically, the home team at Friday night's game was the Dallas Mavericks owned by streaming media pioneer Mark Cuban, also an investor in Streamcheck.

Streamcheck's distributed network of Scanners measure streaming quality from more than 15 cities across US, Canada and Europe. Since its launch in the summer of 2000, the Streamcheck system has performed over 3 million checks on streams of all formats and all types: audio and video, high and low bit rate, live and on-demand. Streamcheck can monitor any stream viewable with the RealPlayer or Windows Media Player.
